Black Fashion in Los Angeles

I have never really taken notice to it but it was recently brought to my attention that I am becoming a prominent figure within the Black/African American Fashion Community within Los Angeles. I myself have never been a apart of a community where I felt welcomed as a black kid within the Black community, so to be accepted now is still very strange to me. It’s not a bad thing nor am I complaining, it’s just feels strange how it all randomly happened so quick. I’d like to think I’m doing something right but at the same time I wonder if it’s just because of social media?

Over the course of me photographing styles on the street on DTLA, those who have stood out the most have been young Black individuals who have their own creative view on fashion. I am always available to shoot any independent fashion events or even shows for those like minded individuals who wants a different view on things. But in the meantime here are some of my favorite looks I’ve seen on the streets.

PS I love all of you beautiful people and I wish to work with more of my beautiful black and brown people.

Hair, Glasses, Eye Shadow…

Can we talk about how amazing it is when the right combination happens to a person’s being when they have the right glasses, the right eye shadow or their hair is just awesome. If you have all three going on the you are in good with me.

As a streetstyle photographer I do look for outfits but I also like to look for what is making this person unique and that’s when all three of the before mentioned happens.  It’s being summer in Los Angeles, and hotter than usual because of the storm from Huston, TX, I’ve noticed people aren’t focused on what to wear because of the heat, but they do focus on what their face would look like.  So I decided to focus on that and the outfits, if the equation is right then I ask for a photo or two. Here some of my favorites so far during this summer.

IrishLatina…

So this is an interesting story of how I met Rebecca and discovered one of the best upcycling designers ever. I was at Los Angeles Fashion Week doing what I do and I see this lady in a gold dress with lime green hair (before Black bear and Mike Posner did it) I asked her for a photo and we had a very amazing conversation. She mentioned she was designer but I had no idea of what I was going to see.
The runway was changed up to look like a paintball course from what I can put together, I could be wrong but these dancers came out and killed it. Following them were the models dancing and posing. I think I mentioned this in a previous post. But at the end of the show out come Rebecca. I knew that I had to link up with her sooner or later and here we are almost a year later.
She recently moved back to Cali so she isn’t too far from Los Angeles and lucky for me she was up to shoot as well. We set up a date and time and took these amazing shots. I suggested to photograph her rather than using a model which was also a plus since she doesn’t have many photos of herself wearing her work.

Colorwork…

It’s very rare that you see someone’s outfit when it matches the interior of an establishment. As I was walking to work, I decided to pass by the Nice Kicks x Mister Cartoons x Nike Cortez event to get a few snaps of some folks, I passed by a nice Vegan joint called Wild (personally their ice cream is a lot better than Little Damage). I saw this amazing blur of color, this flash of glitter, a burst of turquoise. Jasmine is what I saw and she was all up for a photo or two. I decided to shoot her through the massive windows of Wild just for dramatic effect. I hope you enjoy the photos.

New Portraits.

Terribly sorry, as I keep mentioning I have been very busy but have also managed to find time to take a few portraits while out on the streets on Downtown Los Angeles. I am planning to expand out towards South Central, the place I live and grew up in.
In the meantime here are a few photos I took last week.

Be sure to stay tuned for a future update and a possible gallery show within the next couple of months.
Thank you for you time.

Sorry for my absence

Hello everyone, I apologise for not posting in a very long time. I have been quite busy and due to a lot of interruptions I gave not been able to post anything on here. I have been keeping up with the Instagram though. Be sure to follow me at @sartorial.losangeles. I will be in full swing of the blog soon enough with insights and interviews of the people I photograph on the streets. Thanks for the support.

This event needs to have more followers…

So I don’t know if any of you know this, but I am always available to shoot an awesome event or party. I’ve shot for the Lash and Flex Up Crew here in Los Angeles. These events never disappoint and are open to all types of people. I have had the opportunity to shoot a reggae/dancehall event called BOOMYARD at Delicious Pizza in Culver City.

I have never been to any type of reggae type festival/concert/event ever. Unless you can count an underground dance party, but I’m not to sure about that. The energy and people at this event were unlike any I have encountered before. The amazing feeling of being around such positivity and fun was great. It was harder for me to take photos when all I wanted to do was dance.

I did get to see see amazing styles at the event though. That’s what really drew me in aside from the music. I hope you all enjoy these photos as much as I do. Be sure to check out BOOMYARD LA every second Sunday of the month. @Boomyardla

Insight

I’ve been asked many times how I decide who to ask for a photo or how I go about looking for a photo to take. The thing is, I don’t really have a technique or process to it. It’s something one has to see for themselves, mainly because I’m not giving talk my secrets in approaching people in Los Angeles about a photo.

I’ve had a few people accompany me during a walk to observe how I get the shots and approach the diverse people I come across. I’d like to think it was a learning experience for them just as it was for me. If you’d ever like to take a walk with me, feel free to contact me at Sartorial.losangeles@gmail.com and we can set up a day and time to shoot together.

I recently had a good friend of mine come with me on a walk throughout dtla so he can see how I work when I’m out. First thing I told him to take off his earbuds and sunglasses. Always make eye contact with the individual with a smile and bright eyes. But that’s all I’m giving y’all for now. These photos are some I took on my walk with him. I hope you all enjoy.
